Principal’s Message 23/04/2020

Dear Pupils, Parents and Guardians,

Firstly, I hope that you and your family are safe and well in these challenging times and that you all enjoyed Easter at home with your loved ones.

I would like to acknowledge the great work of our parents supporting their children at home during this school closure. I know from personal experience how difficult it is to balance the demands of working from home, home life and the support in completion of school tasks while maintaining a positive and stress-free environment.

To all of our pupils, thank you for engaging so well with your schoolwork and with your teachers. It is important that you make life as easy as possible for your parents during the school closure by helping with your siblings and doing different chores around the house.

Many new skills will be learned and perfected during this lockdown from ball juggling to guitar playing and it is important to focus on new areas you can develop while you have this extended period at home. I hope you are all exercising and doing so within 2km of your home while enjoying the fine weather we have now. As you know, schools are closed until further notice and this lack of certainty can be a source of anxiety and stress. It is important to know that this time will pass and we will soon be back to normal enjoying all the benefits of everyday school life that we all once took for granted.

Our staff will continue to post extensive schoolwork each week on our school website, www.croomns.ie.This work will be placed in the ‘Homework and Assignments’ section and every teacher also has an individual tab. Our twitter account @CroomSchool will also continue to have daily tasks and activities to supplement learning and play at home. There is also a wide range of resources in our ‘Parent’s Corner’ with guidelines and work on internet safety and other interesting areas. Finally, I would like to bring your attention to the RTÉ Home School Hub, which airs every weekday morning. This is another great resource and is aimed at children between First and Sixth classes.

We introduced the Seesaw app and now have every class involved in the programme. Videos and tutorials are posted on the website to help parents access these resources in a step-by-step manner. This app allows for feedback and interaction between students and their teacher. It also allows our special education teachers to be involved with students via the app. It is important to note that schoolwork that will be available on the seesaw app will also be placed separately on the school website for children. Please follow the directions below for your child to become involved:

Seesaw

  1. Go to www.seesaw.me on a computer (or install the seesaw Ios or the Android app).
  2. Click “Log in” on top right hand corner of homepage.
  3. Click “I am a student”
  4. Type in Home Learning code (which you will have received from the teacher’s tab on the website)
  5. View ‘Announcements and Activities’ assigned by your teacher.
  6. Post to your Journal in response to work assigned by the teacher.
  7. Remember, the code changes every 6 days so please keep updated via our website

Our teachers are missing all their students greatly and hoping to be back in our school environment soon. They are working hard in difficult circumstances to post work for pupils at different levels so children continue to develop skills and progress at home. I would like to stress that there is no pressure on parents/guardians to support work completion on a daily basis or to try to substitute school life at home, as this simply cannot be achieved. Just do your best and enjoy the outdoors and fine weather, if possible.

Under GDPR guidelines, in order for your child to continue to access the app we need to get your consent as a parent/guardian. To make it easier for all in this current climate please send an email stating your child’s name and class to principal@croomns.ie if you do NOT consent to your child using seesaw.

You can contact me directly at the above email if you have worries or queries. Alternatively, you can contact the class teacher via email, which is available under teacher tabs on the school website.

All our staff members send their best wishes to parents, guardians and pupils. We look forward to returning to normality as soon as possible and hope you and your extended family remain well. Meanwhile, we commend people for staying home and helping to save lives right across our community.

Thank you and stay safe,

Mr. Emmett Murphy and the staff of St. Mary’s National School, Croom.
